Abstract:

By using an anti-FMRFa antibody, immunocytochemical studies on the Nereidae demonstrate the presence of FMRFa-like molecules, widely distributed thorughout the nervous system and at the base of the gut. Similar results have been obtained in N. diversicolor, N. virens, and P. cultrifera, whatever the age and the sex. The significance of the detected material by immunocytochemical means is discussed as a function of its localization and of the recent biochemical results (Baratte et al., submitted for publication) which have revealed the presence in N. diversicolor of the FMRFamide and of a novel tetrapeptide FTRFamide.
